The increases in both duck and goose production since 1993 are impressive, more than doubling on a worldwide basis. Asia, and particularly China, dominate but the general trend has been clearly upward almost everywhere. During the decade 1993 to 2003,world duck production almost doubled, the numbers slaughtered rising from 1162 million to 2262 million over the period. The accompanying meat production figures rose from 1.72 million tonnes to 3.31mt. It is obvious from Table 1 that Asia is easily theleading producing region and that this is the area where the industry is expanding most rapidly. Back in 1993, Asia accounted for 83% of world duck slaughterings and 76% of duckmeat output. The corresponding figures for 2003 were 89% and 82% respectively.
