A new 30,000 bird complex in The Netherlands is the first parent breeding stock operation to install the 'veranda' housing system. The action of the Dutch government in imposing strict controls on environmental pollution by agriculture, may have beenhighly unpopular with the farming community, but in poultry production especially, it has provided a powerful stimulus for research and development in new, more welfare and environmentally-friendly production systems.
