Europe ethanol makers warn EU move threatens capacity investments

London-A decision by EU politicians to rein in targets for first-generation biofuels puts at risk over Eur5 billion(7 billion)invested in EU biofuel production capacity and will likely force a major hike in imported Brazilian sugar-cane ethanol,the European Bioethanol Fuel Association said September 12.The European Parliament's industry committee voted on the Renewable Energy directive September 11.The committee's amendments call for 40% of the total renewable fuels targets to come from"non-food competing"second-generation biofuels,or from cars running on green electricity and hydrogen by 2020.
