China ethylene demand growth to slow to 3% in 2010: Sinopec, CNPC

Singapore — China's demand for ethylene is expected to rise by just 3% to 80-120 million mt/year in 2010, compared with demand growth of 27% in 2009, analysts from Sinopec Corp. and China National Petroleum Corp. said, according to a report on Sinopec's online newsletter Wednesday. According to the report, demand for ethylene jumped 27% in 2009 in part due to a low base of comparison from the previous year. Following the global economic crisis of 2008, demand for ethylene-based products increased by 1.3 million mt in 2009 as demand for rival recycled-based products declined. In addition, due to a period of heavy destocking in 2008, restocking demand for ethylene in 2009 contributed to an additional 800,000 mt of demand.
