Several studies have shown that climate has been changing in the traditional plantation tracts of India such as the Western Ghats, sub-Himalayan North East India etc. The most significant manifestations of climate change are warmer temperatures and changing pattern of rainfall. Extreme climatic events such as droughts, floods, cyclones or unexpected breaks in monsoon rains have been occurring at increasing frequency and intensity in the recent years in most of the plantation belts in the country. This trend is likely to continue. TTiese events have adversely affected the growth and productivity of plantation crops. Crops have been attacked by pests and diseases in unprecedented ways as a result of climate vagaries which also interfere with harvest operations.
