The Road to Malabar How the Kingdom of Kerala Prospered of Old

Our visit to Malabar was a diversion from a longer tour, but most people make it an out-and-home trip by itself.From the Nilgiri Hills to the ancient Kingdom of Kerala, or Malabar as we call it now, there are two roads. One is by the Eastern Gate - the Railway route, already well known to me, and of which possibly more anon - and the other by the Western Gate, which we took by car in 1929. This latter runs west from Gudalur through the once abandoned but now rapidly reviving land of the Wynaad. We found it quite a rideable road so far as easy gradients and good surface could make it so, but if anyone wishes to practice shying a cricket-ball, don't let him come here. There isn't enough straight for a shy of any reasonable length anywhere, even though they have widened the bends to make them all much less
