MINIMUM WAGE FIXATION IN CHANGED ECONOMIC SCENARIO

Minimum wages continue to be revised by State Governments in a mechanical fashion with little concern on its impact on the industries concerned or on the economy affected by globalization. Sometimes vote bank and political considerations come into play. On the recent proposals published by the Government of Tamil Nadu for the revision of agricultural minimum wages, Mr. C. Sankaranarayanan, Adviser, PAT, who is also a member of the State M.W. Advisory Board, has submitted a memorandum. Since he has placed statutory minimum wage fixation in a new perspective in the changed economic and global free trade environment, and as the matter is of topical interest to the plantation industry, the text of the memorandum is reproduced below.
