The crisis in the tea industry during the last five years on account of declining price realization coupled with rising cost of production, was further accentuated by a gradual eroding of India's share in the world markets and a stagnant domestic consumption. It appears that India's unique and favourable position of having two-element structure, that is, a significant domestic market of her own and a leading share in the world market, has not been adequately exploited and has in fact, been fritteredaway by a wrong conception about the inter-relationship between two markets.
