摘要

The Indian tea industry is on the threshold of a new global competition. Therefore, there is an urgent need to focus on retaining and enhancing the competitive advantages of the industry by improving the quality and productivity of tea, containing thecost of production and increasing the marketing ability. Today, the per capita daily consumption of tea in India is less than a cup and globally this is just half a cup. Herein lies the vast potential for increasing the internal consumption of tea and for exploring the new markets abroad. But this calls for greater attention on the quality front. Even in a tardy demand-growth situation, good quality teas are sold at remunerative prices whereas poor and average grades sell below the cost of production.This reinforces the cause for constant quality upgradation, especially in south India where area under tea and production have been increasing over the years.
