When an organic liquid is spilled on the ground,it may spread out, vaporize, and result in air emissions. Such evaporative losess of toxic chemicals caused by accidental releases must be reported under Section 313 of the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act. For emergency planning,the evaporation rate from potential spills is estimated as part of a consequence analysis and is then used as input to dispersion models to predict the vulnerability zone and hazards to the neighboring community. This article reviews the methods available for estimating the evaporation rates from liquid spills.
