EPA Proposes Standards for Mercury-Cell Chlor-Alkali Plants

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed a regulation to reduce air emissions of mercury and mercury compounds from mercury-cell chloralkali plants, which produce chlorine and caustic using mercury cells. The standards would reduce mercury emissions from a number of vents and emission streams in mercury-cell production and storage processes. they also cover fugitive air emissions - i.e., those that do not pass through a stack or duct designed to control their flow, such as equipment leaks.
