Registration of SUPERCUTS Mark Ordered by Brazil Court Based on Paris Convention

After a 15-year struggle with Brazil's National Institute for Industrial Property (INPI), the American hair salon chain Supercuts in December received authorization from a federal judge to register its mark in the country. INPI had repeatedly rejected Supercuts' applications for registration, claiming that the company's name was merely descriptive of the service it provides and as such unregistrable as a trademark under Brazil's Industrial Propertv Law of 1996.
