As James Bamford reported in our April cover story, the National Security Agency is building a giant high-security data center that will store all types of private communications-including (possibly) yours. The article touched a nerve, to say the least. During a US House subcommittee meeting, representative Hank Johnson (D-Georgia) asked NSA chief Keith Alexander point-blank about Bamford's piece: Could the agency really tap Americans' private emails without a warrant? Alexander's response: "NSA does not have the ability to do that in the United States."
