In large sewage treatment works (STW), drum thickeners are used primarily to thicken raw, activated and mixed sludges to reduce the volume being sent to the digesters. In smaller, satellite STWs - typically processing 7-12m~3/h - where the usual practice is to tanker sludge to central treatment plants for processing, drums are used to thicken the sludge to reduce the volume being transported.
