In 1982 he moved to Beckton stw and then spent several years in Thames Water's R&D, opting to join TWUL at privatisation. In the early 1990s he was seconded to Queen Anne's Gate to help establish UKWIR. In 1996 he left Thames Water Utilities and entered the realm of consultancy, working with DWI, the EA, TWUL, UKWIR and others, this eventually led him into the university arena, lecturing and also assisting SMEs to develop environmental technologies.
