Long ago in the Middle Ages, the tale goes, a priest was climbing the Brocken, the high-est peak in Germany's Harz Mountains. As the cleric climbed out of the low-lying clouds onto a brilliant sunlit sum-mit, he was startled by the image of an immense black heavenly angel, crowned with a rainbow halo, rising toward him out of the mist. Frightened and awed, he stumbled, lost his footing and fell to his death. While this is likely only a tale-no historical details of the event can be found-the optical image of the "angel" is in fact real; such misty phantoms across the world have been dubbed "Brocken Spectres".
