CAMPAIGNING CRUISE ON OLD BEDFORD RIVER

Three narrowboats made a rare, difficult, but ultimately successful attempt to navigate the historic Old Bedford River in April, entering from the tidal Great Ouse at Salter's Lode. Easy non-tidal access was lost in 2006, when the Environment Agency piled off Welches Dam Lock on the Forty Foot Drain. At a stroke this stopped inland access to the Old Bedford River, a waterway that had been navigated for over 350 years.
