CROSS over chronic sewers

Michael Meacher, the Environment Minister, attended the AGM of CROSS (Campaign for Renewal of Older Sewage Systems) to hear how lack of investment in the sewage system could threaten public health. Joan Walley MP, chairperson of CROSS, addressed the group's recent AGM, and called on the Government to take action to improve Britain's crumbling sewer network. "The sewers are suffering from chronic under investment," said Ms Walley. "They have to cope with greater use than ever before, yet are expected to last hundreds of years.Unless we take action now, the sewers will be in complete crisis, leading to massive public and environmental disruption, analogous in many ways to the country's railways."
