The town of kavlinge in southern Sweden has a opulation of 30,000 and a successful meat processing industry which contributes a wastewater population equivalent of some 70,000. Wastewaters from the town flow to a nearby treatment works which was constructed in the 1960s and later extended by Purac in the mid 1980s for denitrification service. Effluent from the slaughterhouse and meat processing are pre-treated at the factory for fat and solids removal, and as a result, the BOD load to the municipal treatment works is in a soluble form.
