This study is a first kinetic approach about the compost liquor treatment by activated sludge. Thisnindustrial wastewater is highly loaded in organic and nitrogen compounds (CODE12,000 mg Lu00021nand NH4nþ-NE4,000 mg Lu00021). The possibility of its treatment in an urban WWTP is studiednmeasuring ammonia oxidation rate with non-acclimated sludge to the industrial effluent. Compostnliquor appears as an inhibitor substrate. The ammonia oxidation rate can be modelled by thenHaldane model: UMAX¼0.180 du00021, KS¼12.0 mgN.Lu00021 and KI¼26.0 mgN.Lu00021. The ammonianoxidation rate also follows for a synthetic substrate which has the same pollutant load as the realnsubstrate. In this case, the ammonia oxidation rate can be modelled by the Monod model:nUMAX¼0.073 du00021 and KS¼4.3 mgN.Lu00021. This result confirms that the ammonia oxidising bacterianare inhibited by the real wastewater. The following-up of nitrate production shows also theninhibition of nitrite oxidising bacteria. The compost liquor treatment seems not possible in annurban WWTP (o50,000 p.e.). That’s why a specific WWTP is recommended and an acclimationnstep of activated sludge is essential.
