摘要

In September 1962, I accepted a part-time position with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) that, unknown to me at the time, was a major life decision. The position was with the USGS Water Resources District Laboratory in Lincoln, Nebraska. The job involved performing analyses of water samples collected from surface and groundwater sites in several upper Midwestern states. At the time I had already obtained a B. S. in Geology, a field that was not hiring, and because I had a wife and daughter to support, decided on a career change before I even had a career. I had just enrolled and begun classes in the College of Pharmacy at the University of Nebraska but needed the part time job to survive.
