Plynlimon-Celebrating 50 years of UK Research in Hydrology

UNLIKE THE UNITED STATES, where hydrologists were professionally active during the 1950s and before, at that time in the United Kingdom, there were very few scientists and engineers employed as hydrologists. Likewise, where hydrology was practiced in countries of the British Empire, those involved were not titled hydrologists.In the 1960s, this situation started to change with several British universities launching post graduate courses in hydrology, the establishment by the government of the Hydrological Research Unit and the launch of a major research project in the Plynlimon Experimental Basins. This paper describes the progress made at Plynlimon over the last 50 years.
