Believe it or not, there are certain disadvan- tages to growing up in Hawaii. For instance, even after 18 years away, I still think the weather has turned bitterly cold when the mercury dips below 60 degrees, and I co'nsider the bananas on "mainland" grocery shelves to be bland imitations of the tangy yellow fingers that grew in my family's back yard. But the greatest drawback to a childhood spent in that turquoise-and-emerald paradise is that ev-ery other location seems drab by comparison, and I have pined for my home since leaving it half my lifetime ago.
