Malampaya future in spotlight

STATE-CONTROLLED Philippine National Oil Company Exploration Corporation (PNOC EC) and politicians have called for a more detailed technical evaluation of the remaining potential of Shell's producing giant Malampaya gas field, which could help decide the asset's future. The resulting study could be used as the basis for extending the life of Malampaya, located on Service Contract 38 off the island of Palawan. Anglo-Dutch supermajor Shell's existing Service Contract is due to expire in 2024, and the Department of Energy (DoE) has yet to agree to the operator's sought extension or announce other firm plans for the offshore asset. Time is increasingly important, given the department last September asked PNOC EC to perform a study into future options for Malampaya.
