In recent years, membrane technologies have been trying to treat municipal wastewater for reuse. In the present study, the poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) microfiltration membrane modified by acrylic acid graft polymerization was used to treat municipal wastewater. Filtration experiments were carried out in stirred dead-end cells. The PVDF-modified composite membrane (PAA-PVDF) was characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis, environmental scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements. The performance of the PAA-PVDF membrane was evaluated by determining the removal of chemical oxygen demand, suspended substance, turbidity, and metal ions. The PAA-PVDF composite membrane was efficient for municipal wastewater advanced treatment, leading to a better effluent quality when compared to the pristine PVDF membrane.
