SRI LANKA - PROTECTED AREA MANAGEMENT AND WILDLIFE CONSERVATION PROJECT

In October 2000, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) approved a $12 million loan to the Government of Sri Lanka for management of protected areas and biodiversity conservation. The project is co-financed through grant facilities by the Global Environment Facility and the Government of Netherlands. The project will run from September 2001 to December 2006. The main objective of the project is to support efforts to conserve the country's valuable natural resources and preserve wildlife biodiversity for the well-being of current and future generations. Sri Lanka is considered a global biodiversity hot spot (Myers et al., 2000); about half of its species are endemic and species richness is also extremely high. The island also provides critical habitat for internationally mobile species. The project has four major components: 1) enhancing institutional capacity; 2) participatory adaptive management of pilot protected areas; 3) collaborative conservation planning; and 4) sustainable financing for community partnership building.
