摘要

The Finnish-funded FAO project "Forestry Programme for Early Rehabilitation in Asian Tsunami Affected Countries" has been operational since May 2005 in Sri Lanka, Indonesia and the Maldives to rehabilitate trees and forests in coastal areas following the December 2004 tsunami. Physical damage to coastal forests, trees in home gardens, trees on farms and mangrove forests was considerable in Aceh, where around 75,000 hectares of forest were lost. In Sri Lanka, physical damage was less dramatic although trees and coastal vegetation along hundreds of kilometers of coastline were damaged as a result of soil salination. Similarly in the Maldives, damage to trees resulted mainly from salination of soil following extensive flooding.
