BLACK GOLD

The 1980s and '90s will go down in history as the decades in which the UK coal industry was devastated. Falling demand for the 'black gold' upon which the Industrial Revolution was founded has ravaged the rail industry - yet in some areas, coal movements by rail are starting to rise again, largely as a result of increased imports, opencast activity and longer-distance flows.
