A week in April 1982 exploring the railways of the South Wales coalfield gave a fascinating snapshot of a scene that would soon pass into history. Before the miners' strike of the mid-1980s, more than 20 collieries were still active in the region - almost all of them rail-connected -along with various washeries, coke works and patent fuel plants.
