While the majority of London Transport's underground railway has historically been worked by multiple units, electric locomotives were used on a limited number of services between 1860 and the early 1960s. Perhaps the most famous were those operated by the Metropolitan Railway, in particular the Metropolitan Vickers' locos built in 1922/23, made famous most recently by celebrity locomotive No. 12 Sarah Siddons. They weren't the earliest electric locos to haul main line services in Britain; that honour fell to a batch of Bo-Bos constructed by Metropolitan Amalgamated. The first batch, numbered 1-10 and known as "camel-backs", were British Westinghouse-built centre cab designs with a distinctive American-style shape, no doubt influenced by the US-based financial backers of the railway.
