An ambitious modernisation plan for the entire Circular Railway in Burma is to be funded by development loans from the Japanese Government. The suburban railway system in Yangon (the former capital city Rangoon) centres on Yangon station in the south of the city, with the most important service being the 45.9km Circular Railway, which runs north in a great loop from the city centre. In January, plans were announced to extend the Circular Railway service to the Thilawa Special Economic Zone, next to the Myanmar International Terminals Thilawa deep sea port via a new branch line 25km south of Yangon; the new line should open in 2015.
