Simplify Brighton line ticketing

TRAVELLING several times on the Brighton line in September, I was once again struck by the variety of tickets available between Brighton, Gatwick and London stations, be they Victoria or the Thameslink type. Now that Gatwick Express sometimes starts at Brighton, the logic of charging extra to sit in a red train escapes me; the timings are virtually identical to Southern services.
