JUST days after the last issue of The RM had gone to press, the appointment by the Department for Transport (DfT) of an Operator of Last Resort was made to take over running services on the Northern network from March 1. Staff will transfer to the public sector operator on their existing terms and conditions, and no jobs will be lost. Transport Secretary Grant Shapps had said in the previous month the franchise was no longer financially sustainable. Mr Shapps said:"For too long, millions of rail passengers in the north of England have had to start and end their working day facing cancellations and delays.
