Cruise ship newbuildings with a combined capacity equivalent to nearly half of the existing world fleet will enter service in the next 4-5 years The large number of cruise ship new buid-ings is raising concerns about over-capacity and, more recently, about the consequences of interest rate rises and a reduction in consumer confidence in the US. Yet orders for new vessels continue to flow in, and such has been the proportions of the 'cruise boom' that slots for newbuildings are almost impossible to find in established cruise yards in Europe, prompting owners to consider orders at untried or inexperienced yards in Japan and Korea.
