If you are looking for a multi-city trip, the most popular pit stops en route to Hawaii are San Francisco, Los Angeles and Las Vegas. Or you can hire a car, hit the Pacific Coast Highway and see all three. Late summer is ideal for visiting Northern California, for harvest time in the vineyards and watching the whales along the coast as they begin to migrate. We spent a couple of days in San Francisco, where the food is reminiscent of the ethnic mix in Hawaii, especially in the trendy Mission district, where Bar Tartine is worth a try. If you want to visit the notorious former jail on Alcatraz Island it's worth booking in advance to avoid the almost permanent queues.
