Little did I realise that a casual glance at the corroding base of a lighting column at the front of my house, in mid-1998, would open a Pandora's Box. Closer inspection revealed that the original wall thickness was less than 2mm between the perforations. I expressed my concern to the local authority and was informed that this was a national problem - and that there was insufficient funding for replacement. Being of an innovative disposition, I immediately saw the potential for a cost-effective solution. Although new concepts inevitably attract some degree of cynicism, I identified the genuine desire for a guaranteed repair, which would substantially extend the life of a column for a fraction of the cost of replacement.
