You might well ask what has gone wrong with all the clever initiatives which have promised to make your business better, more competitive and more productive. Eastern methodologies, guru philosophies and management techniques have been dumped on industry's doorstep by the fragrant lorry load — yet, inexorably, manufacturing has dwindled to a shadow of its former self. For instance, the Department of Trade and Industry and Confederation of British Industry's Fit for the Future campaign encourages companies to take stock and pull themselves up to the level of their betters. But is this really enough to help them survive, let alone thrive?
