The Army has to build bridges, roads, runways and other structures and needs to know where to build them.A Surveyor Engineer is a competent land and hydrographic surveyor, able to produce contoured survey plans as a basis for designs. They are road engineers capable of designing horizontal and vertical alignments and drainage schemes and can also calculate earthwork and construction material quantities.It's a far cry from civvy street surveying, but the qualifications are recognised in the civilian world.
