Robert Ash is professor of economics with special reference to China and Taiwan in the department of economics and the Centre for Financial and Management Studies, and director of the Taiwan studies programme, at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London. Hugh D. R. Baker is emeritus professor of Chinese at SOAS and has published widely on Chinese culture, language, and society. He has a particular interest in Hong Kong, where he conducted fieldwork research from the 1960s onwards.
