The development of civic associations in China has been a subject of scholarly debate since the early 1990s. Jonathan Unger's edited volume, Associations and the Chinese State, represents an important new contribution. It revives the earlier debates, raises new questions, and exemplifies some new directions in the second wave of research that has been under way since the early 2000s.
