Two years ago I had a conversation with a prominent young architect about an urban-design commission he had recently won. He, used to small one-off projects, was scratching his head over the scale of the win. The proliferation of urban-design commissions -from new cities in the Middle and Far East to an increasing number of large-scale mixed-use projects in Europe and the United Kingdom -offered to firms beyond the usual players is a broad, sweeping and growing trend. It's a design type still finding its feet.
