In 2007, Welsh wind farm developer and first-time client West Coast Energy approached the RIBA to recommend local architects for its new offices in Mold, North Wales. Of the six practices suggested by the client advisory service, Liverpool-based Aire Design's 'passion shone through above anyone else', according to West Coast Energy's director Paula Jewson. The client's one-page brief asked for 'light and airy' offices that exemplified sustainable design and would be as carbon-neutral as possible. Aire Design's first move was to persuade the client to go for B REE AM Excellent standard, with a long-term strategy for zero carbon. Aire Design director Doug Clelland advised that a well-insulated, airtight building would save costs on mechanical systems.
