Tate isn't scared of big capital projects. While I worked there, top-level strategies were focused around building projects, which were justified by an already agreed need for more display space, better educational facilities and so on. This update to Tate Britain was undertaken not only during a recession, but also when Tate was trying to raise funds for an extension to Tate Modern. That it got done at all is testament to the hard work of its staff, and an indication of the doors that open when Nicholas Serota comes shaking the donation box. Caruso St John's contribution to Tate Britain's patchwork of buildings fixes a host of problems: accessibility and circulation issues; leaky roofs in the galleries; limited space for school groups; a 'cheery dungeon' cafe; and a decidedly unspecial Members' Room. The practice's modifications have given the gallery back its grand frontage -which lost some of its shine when an entrance closer to the Tube opened in 2001 - rightfully repopulating rooms and passages that used to store leaflets.
