More often than not we begin by shaping the landscape 'captured' between buildings that we inhabit and observe. In this case we were situating a school among other buildings within the city- homes, places of work, shops and cafes. We knew the site well. It is near our office within the Kingsland conservation area in east London. The L-shaped plot last served as a builder's yard and connects Kingsland Road, Downham Road and the Kingsland Basin, which historically was lined with wharves and warehouses. Today, most have been replaced by five to eight-storey apartment buildings, with the exception of the adjacent listed Quebec Wharf, whose brick gable flanks the school's southern boundary. Beginning here, the new collection of brick buildings completes and frames a series of precincts between the neighbouring streets and the canal basin.
