The development of an interprofessional foundation programme for the allied health professions

摘要

The foundation programme has already created considerable interest from a wide range of potential students, many of who wish to fulfil their vocational aspirations and have the potential to succeed but lack the necessary qualifications for direct entry into HE. The first cohort commenced their studies, full of enthusiasm, in September 2003. This innovative foundation programme is contributing to changing the pattern of AHP education provision, by creating an alternative vocational pathway for non-traditional learners. It is providing a 'ladder of progression' from the workplace by creating an effective interface between FE and HE. The curriculum design and admissions procedures are a direct response to the government's widening participation agenda, promoting equality of access and opportunity. As more individuals become aware of this non-traditional entry route into AHP education, it may also contribute to raising aspirations. As one candidate indicated at interview, "taking the first step is the toughest and finding out about this new opportunity has made the process of coming back to study much easier."
