A ferrous based high strength high toughness nickel-cobalt alloy, strengthened by carbon, chromium and molybdenum with a nominal analysis (wt.percent) of 13.4 percent cobalt, 11.1 percent nickel, 3.1 percent hromium, 1.2 percent molybdenum, 0.23 percent carbon and balance of about 71 percent, iron has been developed to yield a combination of high strength and toughness. he alloy, developed by Carpenter Technology of USA, is called AerMet 100 and is patented . For aerospace applications. is specified as AMS 6532 or AMS 6478. Extensive tests on five other high strength steels by both Battelle Laboratory, Coulmbus, OH, and CarTech have verified AerMet 100 alloy's excellent high strengthhigh toughness properties (Fig 1). Separate federal government tests have indicated that AerMet 100 retains its superior toughess at temperatures as low as -54 deg C).Many high strength steels tend to become brittle at such temperature levels. nly one of the five additional high strength alloys tested - AF1410 - showed toughness comparable to that of AerMet 100. These two exhibited elongation of 13 percent and 15 percent respectively, while the remaining four were much lower. The differences in reduction of area were even more marked, with these two showing percent RA values of 65 - 68 percent, while the next best alloy is 57 percent and the remaining three below 50 percent.
