I imagine that most small boys living near the former Southern Region in the 1950s were drawn, as I was, into railway enthusiasm by the spectacle of steam locomotives. That said, post 1967, for me at least, the Dee-six-fivers, were one of the locomotive types that kept my enthusiasm alive on into the diesel era. They later became the Class 33 gaining nick-names including, Cromptons, Slim Jims and Bagpipers. The first generic, the latter two based on class variants.
