The port of Southampton has been a principle gateway to and from the United Kingdom for well over a century, and its shipping connections go back much further. Less than 28 miles from the main shipping routes through the English Channel, it is now a regular call for a variety of vessels including cruise ships, container ships and tankers. The fine natural harbour has a maximum tidal flow of only two knots and a maximum tidal range of 4.5m.
