Launched on 9 May 1953, the preserved Liverpool pilot vessel Edmund Gardner was designed to act as a seagoing base for Liverpool pilots and to deliver and collect them to and from inward and outward bound ships. She performed this vital service until 1982 and was then sold to the infant Maritime Museum for permanent preservation. She is not very old in comparison with some other major preserved ships such as Great Britain of 1843 or Cutty Sark of 1869. Nevertheless her historic importance has been recognised by the National Historic Ships Committee which has included the vessel in its National Core Collection of Historic Ships. The vessel has also received the World Ship Trust's award as an outstanding example of ship preservation.
