At the end of World War II thousands of troops were on the move, either returning home or arriving for leave. Many well-known former ferries were used on a variety of routes to get the troops back home. But as the number of men decreased it was decided to concentrate all the British Army of the Rhine (BAOR) troop movements through the port of Harwich. A troopship service had operated between Harwich and Calais for the first two months of 1945, but this had been closed by Biarritz on 27 February 1945, so a new service with Hook of Holland was inaugurated by Royal Ulsterman on 30 July 1945. She was followed by Duke of York, Ulster Monarch, Vienna, Duke of Rothesay, St Andrew, Antwerp, St Helier, Manxman and Biarritz. Two berths were leased at Harwich Parkeston Quay for the exclusive use of the troopships.
